Diplomatic Call Over Detained Citizen
Egypt Independent reported that Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a Monday evening phone call with his Dutch counterpart, Tom Berendsen, to discuss the detention of an Egyptian citizen by Dutch authorities on the preceding Sunday. The discussion forms part of Egypt’s broader diplomatic outreach to safeguard its nationals abroad.
Request for Explanation and Immediate Release
During the call, Abdelatty asked for a clear explanation of the circumstances surrounding the arrest and urged the prompt release of the detained Egyptian national.
Embassy Protection Under the Vienna Convention
He also stressed that Dutch authorities must provide necessary and adequate protection for the Egyptian Embassy in The Hague, as required by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Continued Consultations to Preserve Friendly Ties
Abdelatty underscored that fully observing these obligations aligns with the principle of reciprocity and reflects Egypt’s steadfast commitment to protecting all diplomatic missions on its territory, a position that Berendsen said he shared. The two ministers agreed to maintain consultations and work toward resolving any outstanding issues, thereby preserving the long-standing friendly relations that have united Egypt and the Netherlands over the past decades.
