Kuwait University’s College of Science inaugurated a Petroleum Services Laboratory on Wednesday in collaboration with SLB, a global energy technology company. The facility is designed to advance applied learning and bolster the technical abilities of undergraduate and master’s students in geology and petroleum geology, while also supporting faculty research.
Lab equips students with industry-standard tools
Dr Haider Behbehani, dean of the College of Science, told reporters that the laboratory is equipped with specialised software and techniques used for exploring petroleum reservoirs and analysing underground rock formations. He explained that the lab will help connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications and familiarise students with the technologies currently employed in the oil industry.
Behbehani emphasised the value of collaboration between academic institutions and the oil sector. Partnerships with specialist firms, he said, enhance teaching and research, allow the university to keep up with scientific and technological developments, and better prepare Kuwaiti graduates for the job market.
Digital tools to sharpen geological skills
Dr Fawzia Abdullah, assistant dean for planning, consultations and training, stated that the lab enables students to learn the latest software used in petroleum exploration and to refine their technical skills using digital tools for studying geological formations. She noted that upgrading scientific and training facilities improves the calibre of graduates, reinforces the integration of theory and practice, and creates greater opportunities to draw on the expertise of the oil sector. This, she added, helps produce qualified Kuwaiti specialists in earth sciences and petroleum geology. — KUNA
