Raphinha, Not Yamal, Is Barcelona’s True Pillar, Says Expert
Published By Regional Desk
European football analyst Andy Brassell has challenged the widespread view that teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is the leading candidate for the Ballon d’Or, arguing instead that Brazilian winger Raphinha is the most crucial figure at Barcelona.
Speaking to TalkSport, Brassell said that coach Hansi Flick had made clear Raphinha was not injured but too valuable to risk in matches. “They have just extended his contract until 2030. He is their most important player, in my opinion even more so than Lamine Yamal—both on and off the pitch,” Brassell stated.
Record-Breaking Form
Raphinha’s impact is reflected in his statistics. He leads the Spanish La Liga scoring chart with 12 goals in just seven appearances and has also scored twice against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League. His outstanding performances prompted Barcelona’s management to secure his future with a contract extension until 2030.
Tactical Shift Behind Goal Surge
Coach Hansi Flick deployed Raphinha as a central striker after Robert Lewandowski’s departure, following Barcelona’s failed attempt to sign Julian Alvarez. The Brazilian has excelled in the new role, accounting for his prolific scoring.
Carefully Managed Fitness
Raphinha’s importance led Flick to adopt a cautious approach after the player sustained a minor thigh injury while on duty with Brazil. Flick rested him against Getafe and left him out of the Champions League match against Galatasaray to preserve him for the upcoming El Clasico and European fixtures. “He is a very valuable player, and we cannot risk him,” Flick reiterated.
Yamal’s Own Achievements
Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal continues to make history. After winning the World Cup with Spain, the young star has recorded eight goals and seven assists for Barcelona this season. Attention now turns to October 26, when it will be decided whether he fulfills his dream of winning the Ballon d’Or and becoming the youngest recipient of the award, amid strong competition from England’s Harry Kane.
