Iraqi Prime Minister Meets Saudi Crown Prince in Riyadh to Discuss Security and Energy Cooperation
Published By Arab Hub Post Staff
IraqiNews.com reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Wednesday. The meeting covered increasing regional trends and ways to boost collaboration between Baghdad and Riyadh to promote Middle Eastern security and stability.
Meeting Focuses on Security Cooperation and Regional Trends
According to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reviewed current regional events and discussed how to coordinate their nations’ responses. The encounter was described as a crucial diplomatic interaction between Iraq and Saudi Arabia amid rising tensions in the Gulf, following fatal strikes on Riyadh’s international airport and ongoing disruptions to regional energy and commercial lines.
Condemnation of Airport Attacks and Economic Strain
During the meeting, Al-Zaidi expressed the Iraqi government’s condemnation of the targeting of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as any attacks or actions that harm civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts. This condemnation follows a series of Houthi attacks on the airport over the past week, which have raised concerns about the security of civilian aviation and critical infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. Al-Zaidi noted that the broader regional war is placing increasing strain on Iraq’s economy, particularly through disruptions to oil exports and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Energy Dialogue Builds on Recent Ministerial Talks
The discussions came after several days of high-level Iraqi participation in international energy conferences sponsored by Saudi Arabia. Iraq’s Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair and Electricity Minister Ali Saadi Waheeb attended the WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh, where they met with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman to explore ways to improve energy cooperation. Both countries have been looking into developing energy infrastructure, enhancing electrical cooperation, and broadening economic relations, as regional instability has prompted attention to alternate trade and oil export routes. Al-Zaidi’s meeting with Mohammed bin Salman elevates Iraq‑Saudi ties to the forefront of broader diplomatic efforts to manage the effects of the regional crisis.
