Iraq’s Oil Minister Takes Part in OPEC+ and Energy Forums in Riyadh
Published By Arab Hub Post Staff
Iraq’s Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair attended a series of high-level energy meetings in Riyadh, including OPEC+ consultations and international ministerial talks on oil market stability, energy security, and investment amid rising regional instability.
OPEC+ Consultations
According to Iraq’s Ministry of Oil, Khudair attended an OPEC+ consultative meeting where members addressed global oil market changes, energy security, and the significance of continuing to invest in oil infrastructure.
The talks also focused on the need to fortify energy systems and infrastructure to survive interruptions, as regional instability and uncertainty over shipping via the Strait of Hormuz continue to pose challenges for oil-producing nations.
Iraq, one of OPEC’s main producers, relies heavily on petroleum exports to fund government spending; thus, the stability of international oil markets and export routes is vital to its economy.
WPC Energy Congress
During his visit to Riyadh, Khudair took part in the 25th WPC Energy Congress, held under the theme “Pathways to Energy for All.” The congress brought together energy ministers, industry leaders, and international organizations to discuss energy security, investment, and the transition to more sustainable energy systems. Discussions covered technology to cut carbon emissions, clean hydrogen development, energy project financing, and initiatives to guarantee a secure and dependable energy supply.
IEF17 Meeting
The Iraqi Minister also participated in the 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting (IEF17), sponsored by Saudi Arabia with the theme “Energy Security and Shared Goals in a New Era.” The event sought to strengthen cooperation between energy producers and consumers, enhance transparency in global oil and gas markets, and broaden the sharing of energy data. Participants also discussed the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI), an international effort to improve the availability and reliability of energy market data.
Iraq‑Saudi Engagement
The discussions occurred in Riyadh while Saudi Arabia hosted a series of major international energy summits, gathering governments and business executives amid heightened Gulf‑region security concerns. Al‑Ibadi’s involvement reflected Iraq’s broader political and economic engagement with Saudi Arabia, which included talks with Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ali Saadi Waheeb on bilateral energy cooperation and electrical infrastructure. The visit coincided with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al‑Zaidi’s trip to Riyadh, underscoring ongoing high‑level cooperation between Baghdad and Riyadh as both countries confront regional security and economic challenges.
