Kuwait’s Capital Governor, Sheikh Abdullah Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, visited the Sharq Fish Market on Tuesday to inspect the ongoing development project. He reviewed plans to modernise facilities, improve services and preserve the market’s historical identity as one of the country’s prominent heritage markets. The initiative aligns with Gulf-wide efforts to revitalise historic souqs while integrating modern amenities.
He received a detailed briefing on the project’s phases and implementation mechanisms, including the establishment of a temporary market to ensure uninterrupted commercial activity during the main market’s renovation, according to a statement from the Capital Governorate carried by KUNA.
Development Plan
The plan calls for upgrading infrastructure and service facilities, improving entry and exit arrangements, and increasing the number of stalls from 214 to more than 240. The expansion is expected to raise the market’s capacity and provide a more organised and comfortable environment for vendors and shoppers.
Temporary Market
The temporary market is set to open officially on Thursday, allowing trade and public services to continue while the main market undergoes renovation, the statement added.
Heritage and Coordination
Sheikh Abdullah affirmed the governorate’s commitment to monitoring development and service projects that aim to improve the quality of services for citizens and residents. He stressed the need for coordination among the relevant authorities so that work follows the approved plans while addressing stall owners’ needs and keeping their businesses running.
He noted that Sharq Fish Market forms part of Kuwait’s historical memory and maritime heritage, underlining the importance of balancing preservation of its traditional character with the demands of modernization. He commended the implementing company and the participating government agencies, expressing hope that the project will enhance the market’s appearance and functionality while reflecting its historical significance and meeting visitors’ expectations.
