New Duty‑Free Zones Approved
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced the establishment of duty‑free markets at three major land border crossings: Al Wajajah, Khatmat Malaha and Rub’ al Khali.
Details of the Decision
The decision was issued by His Excellency Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsen Al Shuraqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, under Decision No. 145/2026, which authorises the new commercial zones.
Objectives and Expected Impact
The initiative aims to stimulate economic and commercial activity at Oman’s land borders by offering goods at competitive prices that are fully exempt from customs duties and taxes.
Beyond boosting local commerce, the duty‑free zones are intended to strengthen the logistics sector, support cross‑border tourism and improve the overall travel experience by expanding retail choices for transit passengers.
Regional Context
Oman shares land borders with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, placing the new zones at strategic points along its western and southern frontiers.
