Kuwait to Link Eye Screening Camerels for Faster Test Results

Kuwait, a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, is preparing to link eye examination cameras at health centres with ophthalmologists electronically to speed up the delivery of test results and cut waiting times for referrals and appointments, as part of efforts to strengthen early detection of eye diseases.
Project Announcement and Official Statements
The initiative was announced during the inauguration of World Sight Day activities on Monday by Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Foudari, who heads the hospital’s Ophthalmology Department and chairs the Ministry of Health’s Council of Ophthalmology Departments, said eye screening services are already provided across Kuwait’s governorates through primary healthcare centres and public hospitals.
Screening Details and Equipment
He explained that the screening campaigns involve visual acuity tests, eye pressure measurements to help detect glaucoma and retinal examinations using modern equipment that removes the need for dilating eye drops.
Al-Foudari emphasised the value of regular eye examinations, especially for people aged over 40, pointing out that early detection of retinal diseases can lower the risk of complications.
Awareness Activities and Future Plans
Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital Director Dr. Nada Al-Hassan noted that the hospital’s World Sight Day programme featured eye, eye pressure and fundus examinations carried out by specialist medical teams.
She added that the hospital will continue its awareness and screening activities throughout the week, including an early breast cancer detection event on Wednesday and a World Rheumatism Day event on Thursday.
The Ministry also said it will organise an awareness event in November focusing on keratoconus, a condition that affects the cornea, and will present the available treatment options.
