Qatar’s Director General of Public Security and Vice Chairman of the Civil Defense Council, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Jassim Al Sulaiti, said that through the council the state is committed to raising public awareness and encouraging home‑safety practices in order to strengthen preparedness and reinforce public safety.
Commitment to Public Safety
Speaking on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), observed annually on Oct. 13, Al Sulaiti highlighted the essential part families play in embedding home‑safety habits and spreading knowledge of the measures required to prevent hazards and lessen their harmful effects. He urged the establishment of a solid culture of prevention and safety together with proactive preparedness to face dangers, noting that this year’s IDDRR, conducted under the banner “Resilience Starts at Home”, offers a chance to stress the family’s contribution to community safety and resilience.
Family‑Centred Prevention Theme
Al Sulaiti also reaffirmed Qatar’s backing for the objectives and priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015‑2030 on the international arena, and stressed the need to boost global cooperation, exchange expertise and develop capabilities to reduce disaster risks and promote sustainable development.
Civil Defense Perspective
Maj. Gen. Hamad Othman Al Dehaimi, Director‑General of the General Directorate of Civil Defense and a member of the council, underlined the significance of prevention and advance readiness in confronting emergencies and limiting their outcomes.
He pointed out that the observance provides an opening to increase awareness of the actions required to build a community that is better prepared and more resilient when faced with hazards, adding that this theme highlights the core role of the family in nurturing a prevention‑and‑safety culture and in making known the vital steps needed to tackle potential risks.
Al Dehaimi noted that the Ministry of Interior, acting through its General Directorate of Civil Defense, has continually pursued the advancement of the prevention and safety system and the improvement of preparedness and emergency‑response abilities.
He also emphasised the necessity of forming partnerships with various sections of society, recognising that disaster‑risk reduction calls for an all‑hands‑on‑deck approach, and stressed that responsible authorities must work hand‑in‑hand with individuals and families whose awareness of and dedication to safety requirements are crucial for bolstering community security and emergency preparedness.
Al Dehaimi concluded that these joint endeavours fortify community security and enhance its ability to react to emergencies efficiently and effectively, reiterating the need to stay focused on preparedness and prevention.
