Signing of the Agreement
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Tuesday that Egypt and Djibouti have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen bilateral tourism cooperation.
The agreement was signed in Cairo by Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy and Djibouti’s Minister of Trade and Tourism Orbis Hiilaf Orbis.
Key Areas of Cooperation
It outlines joint tourism marketing, investment in tourism ventures, and hospitality training programmes. Both sides agreed to appoint liaison officers to monitor implementation, with a special focus on sharing hotel management expertise.
Discussions on Heritage and Capacity Building
During the meeting, which was also attended by Djibouti’s Ambassador to Cairo Ahmed Ali Bari, the ministers exchanged views on broader knowledge transfer in tourism and antiquities.
The talks covered capacity building, museum establishment and management, archaeological restoration, excavation work, and the oversight of services at heritage sites.
Proposed Twinning and Implementation Steps
The officials examined a proposal to create a twinning arrangement between the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El‑Sheikh and Djibouti City, aiming to leverage the tourism strengths of both locations and facilitate expertise exchange.
Sherif Fathy stressed the need for ongoing coordination to swiftly put the agreed cooperation areas into practice.
Orbis Hiilaf Orbis said his goal is to raise the volume of bilateral tourist traffic, pointing out that EgyptAir presently operates three flights each week to Djibouti.
