Election Result and Vote Count
Kuwait has been re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term, obtaining 173 votes, which was the second-highest total among the countries elected.
Diplomatic Reaction and Priorities
Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced the outcome on Tuesday evening and told KUNA that the re-election represents a diplomatic achievement and renews international confidence in Kuwait.
He noted that this confidence reflects appreciation for Kuwait’s foreign policy grounded in moderation, balance, dialogue, respect for international law and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.
Al-Banai congratulated His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the government and the people of Kuwait, saying the result underscores Kuwait’s standing in the international community.
He added that the achievement was made possible by the wise directives and continued support of the political leadership, and will enable Kuwait to build on its council experience while continuing to support multilateral action, international cooperation and humanitarian causes.
Focus Areas and Responsibilities
Al-Banai said Kuwait regards the confidence placed in it as a responsibility, particularly at a critical moment when the human rights system faces growing challenges from escalating armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and the violations that accompany them.
Kuwait will continue its approach of constructive dialogue and cooperation with all member states and relevant UN mechanisms, paying special attention to the rights of women, children and persons with disabilities, the protection of civilians in armed conflict and ensuring access for humanitarian aid.
The Palestinian cause will remain at the top of Kuwait’s concerns, in line with its firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to self-determination.
He stressed that the council’s credibility depends on its ability to carry out its responsibilities objectively and fairly, free of politicisation, selectivity and double standards, applying the same standards to everyone without exception.
International Support and Acknowledgements
Al-Banai said the re-election resulted from national and diplomatic efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kuwait’s diplomatic missions, which actively engaged member states to explain the country’s priorities and commitments.
He thanked all the countries that voted for Kuwait, as well as the Asia-Pacific Group for supporting its candidacy.
