Kuwait Highlights Role of UN Political Missions and Calls for Adequate Resources
Published By Arab Hub Post Staff
UN Special Political Missions
Kuwait’s representative to the United Nations, Diplomatic Attaché Abdulaziz Al-Humaidah, told the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly that the organization’s special political missions are vital for preventive diplomacy, helping to stop conflicts before they erupt and to settle disputes peacefully while supporting broader peacebuilding efforts.
Resource Needs and Coordination
He urged that these missions be given the financial and human resources matching their tasks and challenges, stressed transparency, accountability and sound management, and called for a balance between what the missions are asked to do and the means they receive, together with tighter cooperation among UN entities.
Kuwait’s Contributions and Follow‑up
Al-Humaidah outlined Kuwait’s record of support, noting that it hosted the UN Iraq‑Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) for twelve years until its mandate ended in 2003 and covered two‑thirds of the mission’s budget. He also pointed to the recent adoption of Security Council Resolution 2792 (2025), which guarantees continued UN monitoring of the cases of missing Kuwaiti and third‑country nationals, as well as missing Kuwaiti property, including the national archive.
Cooperation and Commitment
He said Kuwait anticipates ongoing close cooperation with the Secretary‑General’s High‑Level Representative Mari Yamashita to put the resolution into practice, voiced full backing for her work to achieve concrete progress toward closing those files, thanked the Security Council members for their attention to the humanitarian and national aspects of the issue, and reaffirmed Kuwait’s dedication to upholding UN efforts to maintain international peace and security.
