Kuwait stresses UN special political missions vital for peace and conflict prevention

UN Missions’ Role Emphasized

Kuwait reaffirmed on Wednesday the indispensable role of United Nations special political missions in preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, peaceful dispute settlement and sustainable peace‑building.

The statement was delivered by Kuwait’s Diplomatic Attache Abdulaziz Al‑Humaida before the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) of the UN General Assembly during a session focused on special political missions.

The remarks underscore Kuwait’s active diplomatic engagement within the Gulf region and at the United Nations.

Resource Allocation and Coordination

He stressed that these missions must be fully empowered with financial and human resources that match their operational responsibilities and field challenges, while upholding high standards of transparency, accountability and fiscal management. Al‑Humaida emphasized that allocating resources in line with assigned responsibilities is essential for operational sustainability, and he urged stronger coordination among UN bodies, knowledge sharing and capacity building to optimise performance and resource efficiency.

Kuwait’s Historical Contributions and Current Resolution

He recalled Kuwait’s hosting of the United Nations Iraq‑Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) for twelve years until 2003, noting that the country financed two‑thirds of the mission’s budget. He also referred to the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2792 (2025), which maintains UN oversight of the files concerning missing Kuwaiti citizens, third‑country nationals and stolen Kuwaiti property, including the national archives.

Continued Support for UN Charter

Al‑Humaida expressed Kuwait’s commitment to work closely with Ms. Mari Yamashita, the High‑Level Coordinator tasked with implementing the resolution, and thanked the Security Council members for their support on these humanitarian and national matters. In conclusion, he reiterated Kuwait’s unwavering support for the United Nations in advancing global peace and security in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
