Meeting Convened to Address Export Ban
LEDA has called on exporters and owners of export firms to attend a gathering where they will review recent sector developments, discuss the obstacles arising from recent suspensions of export activity, and share their views and suggestions.
Date and Venue
The gathering is set for Wednesday 14 October at LEDA’s headquarters in Tripoli.
LEDA’s Official Statement
LEDA said the meeting reflects its commitment to maintaining direct communication with exporters and working toward practical solutions that help overcome obstacles, protect exporters’ interests, and ensure the continued access of Libyan products to international markets.
Background to the Ban
The meeting follows a contentious decision by the Ministry of Economy to impose a total ban on Libya’s exports and re-exports.
Exporters have largely criticised the measure, describing it as overly harsh.
LEDA, tasked with promoting exports, has expressed dissatisfaction with the sweeping ban.
Government Rationale
The Ministry of Economy argues that the temporary ban aims to shield local consumer prices, curb demand for foreign currency, preserve hard-currency reserves and support the Libyan dinar’s value on the parallel market.
Exporter Response
Numerous exporters who have devoted resources to building overseas markets are lobbying for carve‑outs from the comprehensive prohibition.
