Morocco recorded 23 fatalities and 2,995 injuries, 132 of them serious, in 2,241 road accidents across urban areas during the week from 19 to 25 October, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) reported.
Leading causes identified
In its weekly bulletin, the DGSN attributed the majority of crashes to driver inattention, followed by failure to yield, loss of vehicle control, pedestrian inattention and speeding. Additional contributing factors included illegal turns, failure to keep a safe distance, ignoring traffic signs and signals, driving against the flow of traffic and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Enforcement operations
Over the same period, police recorded 52,459 traffic violations. Authorities issued 8,190 reports that were forwarded to prosecutors and collected 44,269 fixed fines, generating MAD 9.52 million in revenue. Enforcement also led to the impounding of 5,606 vehicles, the seizure of 8,190 documents and the removal of 509 vehicles from circulation.
The figures cover only incidents that occurred within urban boundaries and exclude accidents on roads outside cities, the DGSN clarified.
