Published By Arab Hub Post Staff
Libyan and Algerian officials have held a coordination meeting in Tripoli to discuss progress on reopening the Ghadames–Debdeb border crossing, according to Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Meeting Focuses on Bilateral Agreements
The gathering, which took place at the ministry’s headquarters, was chaired by Ambassador Ashraf Mohammed Al-Taieb, director of the International Cooperation Department. Representatives from various Libyan sectors and authorities involved with the border crossing attended the session.
The ministry stated that the meeting aimed to advance the implementation of mutual understandings with Algeria regarding the reopening of the crossing. It forms part of follow-up efforts on the provisions of the minutes signed by the Libyan-Algerian Technical Experts Team on 9 November 2023, as well as the outcomes of the preparatory experts’ meeting for the 15th session of the Libyan-Algerian Joint High Executive Committee, signed in Tripoli on 29 January 2026.
Those documents included, among other matters, both sides’ affirmation of their determination to begin operations at the crossing before the end of 2026.
Strategic Importance of the Crossing
Participants emphasised the need to strengthen coordination between the Libyan and Algerian sides, reflecting a shared commitment to reopening this vital border point. They noted its importance in facilitating the movement of people and goods, promoting trade, and enhancing connectivity between the two countries, in line with arrangements already in place at border crossings with neighbouring states.
Operational Preparations and Coordination
The meeting also reviewed the mechanisms and procedures required to reopen the crossing in accordance with applicable laws, legislation, and regulations. Emphasis was placed on the need for coordination among all relevant agencies and authorities, completion of necessary operational, logistical, and staffing arrangements, and provision of the requirements and resources needed to ensure the crossing’s readiness and resumption of operations under approved frameworks and procedures.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the meeting reflects its commitment to following up on the implementation of bilateral agreements and understandings with Algeria and strengthening cooperation in a manner that serves the mutual interests of the two countries.
Libya and Algeria share a long border, and the Ghadames–Debdeb crossing is a key trade and travel route between the two North African nations.
