Kuwait launches North Kabd wastewater plant to boost water reuse
Published By Arab Hub Post Staff
Kuwait City: Public Works Minister Dr Noura Al-Mashaan laid the foundation stone on Monday for the North Kabd wastewater treatment plant, a project covering study, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the facility and related infrastructure. The ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Yang Xin, senior ministry officials and representatives of the Chinese firm executing the project. According to a statement, this is the second agreement signed between Kuwait and China during the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to China, when he was Crown Prince.
Minister highlights leadership support
In a speech at the event, Al-Mashaan said the project follows directives from His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who prioritise infrastructure development and sustainable development to secure a better future for Kuwaiti citizens. She described the project as reflecting the depth of friendship and cooperation between Kuwait and China, and as one of the Ministry of Public Works’ major strategic initiatives to modernise the country’s wastewater system, align it with development plans and strengthen environmental sustainability.
Project scope and technology
The project includes construction of pumping stations in Shadadiya, Jahra and Mishref, in addition to pipeline networks and tunnel-boring networks — the first of their kind in Kuwait — to transport wastewater and treated water. Storage tanks for the water will also be built. Al-Mashaan said the facility would include a central incinerator to dispose of waste from treatment operations, as well as a renewable energy system using solar power and biogas to meet part of its energy needs. She highlighted the project’s role in upgrading wastewater infrastructure and improving the use of treated water, enabling its reuse for irrigation and landscaping. These measures would help rationalise water consumption, conserve natural resources, protect the environment and combat desertification, she added.
Vision for modern infrastructure
Al-Mashaan said the project marked an important step toward establishing modern and sustainable infrastructure in Kuwait, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to delivering vital projects that meet the country’s present and future needs and support its sustainable development drive. She expressed deep gratitude to His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince and His Highness the Prime Minister for their continued support for development projects, praying to God to protect Kuwait, its leadership and its people from all harm. — KUNA
