OAPEC Holds Third Seminar on Carbon Emission Cuts in Saudi Arabia’s Downstream Oil Sector
Published By Regional Desk
Saudi Arabia hosted the third seminar organized by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) on pathways to reducing carbon emissions in downstream oil industries, in cooperation with the kingdom’s Ministry of Energy.
The event was held in Riyadh, the Saudi capital and a key centre for Arab petroleum operations.
Seminar Launch and Objectives
The two-day gathering took place on 14-15 October at the Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Center, held on the sidelines of the 25th World Petroleum Congress.
In his opening address, OAPEC Secretary-General Khaled Al-Otaibi said the event reflected the organization’s commitment to fostering technical dialogue and strengthening regional cooperation.
He stressed that balanced policies, effective technologies and sustainable investment are essential to meet rising demand for petroleum products, improve efficiency and curb carbon emissions.
Al-Otaibi added that downstream oil activities remain central to OAPEC’s work because they generate added value, support industrial development and boost the competitiveness of Arab economies.
Key Speakers’ Remarks
He also thanked Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud for hosting and sponsoring the seminar, praising his backing for constructive dialogue, knowledge sharing and cooperation to advance the energy sector.
Saudi Deputy Minister of Energy for Sustainability and Climate Change Khaled AlMuhaideb highlighted the need for regional cooperation and for tailoring emission-reduction pathways to each country’s national circumstances.
He pointed out that carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), artificial intelligence and a circular carbon economy approach can enhance efficiency and manage emissions while safeguarding energy security and affordability.
Participants and Outcomes
The seminar brought together officials from government bodies, representatives of companies, experts from academic and research institutions, and delegates from regional and international organisations to exchange expertise and explore practical solutions for cutting carbon emissions in downstream oil industries.
