Four to Face Trial in Custody After Rabat Protest Injures Three Officers

Unauthorized gathering in Rabat

Moroccan prosecutors have ordered four individuals to stand trial in custody following an unauthorized gathering in Rabat on October 12 that left three police officers injured, according to a statement from the public prosecutor’s office. The incident took place in Rabat, the kingdom’s capital, where demonstrations occasionally draw security attention.

Police response and injuries

The prosecutor at Rabat’s Court of First Instance said the assembly involved roughly forty people, among whom fourteen were women. Security forces intervened after participants allegedly disrupted public order and obstructed access to public services. Officers instructed the crowd to disperse, but the participants refused to comply and allegedly resisted attempts to clear the area.

Charges and detention

As a result of the confrontation, three officers sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to hospital for treatment. A judicial investigation subsequently led to the arrest of seven suspects, who were placed in police custody for questioning. After appearing before prosecutors, four of those detained were charged with resisting authorities, taking part in an unauthorized gathering, insulting public officials while they performed their duties and committing violence against them. The four remain in custody pending trial.

Legal safeguards

Prosecutors affirmed that all seven detainees were afforded their legal rights during questioning, including access to legal defense.
